The School 
The Research Assessment Exercise 2008 saw Bangor Psychology rated 7th (out of 76) for research power and this combined with the highest possible rating for teaching quality and the third largest psychology student body in the UK provides an unrivalled combination of quality and quantity. The School invested extensively in a modern teaching, learning and research environment, including brain-imaging (MRI) technology and is one of only two UK departments to be awarded 6 stars in the CHE European Excellence rankings. Students have access to state-of-the-art research and computing facilities and the opportunity to study under world-renowned academic staff.

The School also boasts a number of prestigious research centres, including the Wolfson Centre for Cognitive Neuroscience and the Centre for Experimental Consumer Psychology, which, as well as being in the vanguard of academic research in these fields, offer students unique opportunities for project work covering important theoretical and practical elements. It is also part of the College of Health and Behavioural Sciences, which supports world-class cross-discipline collaborative research that feeds directly into teaching. The School has a thriving postgraduate community of over 100 master’s and more than 50 PhD students.

The teaching
The School’s Psychology masters degrees cover a number of specialist areas that reflect the mix of research expertise within the department. As one of the leading academic departments in UK psychology, the School’s outstanding worldwide reputation attracts top-calibre students and academics from across the globe. In the words of the Head of School, our research and teaching excellence means that students will be learning from ‘leading experts in our field, who are conducting research of internationally recognised excellence and offering some of the most relevant postgraduate teaching around’. We also pride ourselves on the high priority we place on caring for and supporting our students and the University regularly performs well in independent polls for student support. 

The courses
MA Psychology
Offers advanced study in psychology, with an emphasis on both research excellence and critical writing skills.

MRes Psychology
Provides an excellent spring board to further research (PhD) as it has half the teaching and twice the research of MA/MSc programmes.

MA/MSc Consumer Psychology with Business
Provides an in-depth understanding of behaviour, specifically consumer behaviour, in the world of business.

MSc Psychological Research
This course is exceptional for its dual emphasis on basic psychological science and applied issues. Specialisms are available.

MSc Foundations of Clinical Psychology
Provides a strong academic foundation in areas that are helpful for advanced study in clinical psychology.

MSc Foundations of Clinical Neuropsychology
Provides students with a strong knowledge of clinical neuropsychology as a basis for research, clinical training or professional practice.

MSc Neuroimaging
Focusing on the medical aspects this course provides students with the background knowledge and technical skills to design, analyse and evaluate imaging research.

MSc Applied Behaviour Analysis:
This Behaviour Analyst Certification Board (BACB)-recognised course is focused on developing advanced theoretical and practical knowledge of the principles of behaviour analysis.

Doctorate in Clinical Psychology:
This is a British Psychological Society (BPS)-accredited training programme, leading to qualification as a clinical psychologist and eligibility for chartered status with the BPS. 

The funding
Bangor University, School of PsychologyThe School is recognised by the UK Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) for its postgraduate training and offers its own PhD student fellowships (1+3 years – for up-to-date details, please see our website). There are two full fees MRC studentships that include a stipend of £13K and a fee remission of £3,390 for those applying for Neuroimaging. There are also bursaries available for gifted UK and international students. We can also help you apply for funding from other government and industry sources. The location
Bangor is situated on the north Wales coast between the mountains of Snowdonia and the sea, making it one of the most attractive university cities in the UK. It boasts excellent transport links with the rest of the UK and has a reputation as a compact, friendly city. Bangor also boasts a vibrant nightlife that is dominated by the term-time influx of 8,000 students and this, combined with the low costs of living and the low crime rate, make it the ideal student city.
