Economics and Finance Institution: Birkbeck, University of London Faculty: School of Business, Economics & Informatics Department: Economics, Mathematics and Statistics Level: Postgraduate Study modes: Full time, Part time Course content: Economics and finance at Birkbeck has an excellent reputation for the quality of its research and for the quality of its training; the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise rated 20 per cent of the Department's work as world-leading and 50 per cent as internationally excellent; the Commodities Finance Centre, a forum for academics and practitioners working in the field of commodities modelling, is held within the Department; research students will be jointly trained during the 1st year of PhD study by Birkbeck and University College London, as part of the Bloomsbury PhD Programme; within staff-guided courses in research methods students have the chance to read, present and discuss papers on topics including: economic theory, empirical microeconomics, macroeconomics, and finance. students take at least two MSc option courses, and their 1st year final mark will be based on class presentations and a take-home examination; continuation on the programme requires satisfactory performance in Year 1; after Year 1, students attend weekly PhD seminars, where they have the opportunity to present the results of research and work closely with their supervisor on a thesis; teaching opportunities are also available.
